Young’s Schema Questionnaire

Welcome to the Young’s
Schema Questionnaire

Schemas are broad, pervasive themes about oneself and relationships, formed in childhood and often dysfunctional. Early Maladaptive Schemas arise from negative experiences, such as abandonment or criticism, shaping our responses to the world. These schemas influence how we perceive ourselves and others. There are 20 identified schemas that guide our behaviours. We cope with these schemas through:

  • Surrender: Repeating patterns and becoming compliant.
  • Avoidance: Escaping or disconnecting emotionally.
  • Overcompensation: Acting opposite to the schema, seeking control or dominance.

These coping styles affect how we interact with the world throughout our lives.

What to do...

The linked Questionnaire contains several statements that someone might use to describe him or herself.
Please read each statement and decide how well it describes you.
When you are not sure, base your answer on what you emotionally FEEL, NOT on what you THINK to be true.

Choose the highest rating from 1 to 6 that describes you

= Completely untrue of me

4 = Moderately true of me

2 = Mostly untrue of me

5 = Mostly true of me

3 = Slightly more true than untrue

6 = Describes me perfectly
